Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis represents an autoimmune disease in which the body attacks itself and leads to severe destruction of joints (e.g. hands and feet). It is more common for the cervical spine (neck) to be affected by rheumatoid arthritis, although it may produce back pain in the lumbar spine (low back).

The symptoms will be similar to osteoarthritis (degenerative arthritis). Treatment is conservative and should include:

• Anti-inflammatory medications (e.g. NSAID’s or oral steroids) to relieve the inflammation
• Active physical therapy or water therapy to maintain motion.
