Chiropractic is often one of the first points of care when someone experiences an onset of lower back pain. Holding that dysfunction of the spine (such as a joint problem in the facet joints or sacroiliac joints) can cause pain, a chiropractor focuses on treating subluxation, which refers to the loss of functioning that results from a vertebra that is an altered position in comparison to the other vertebrae.
Various chiropractic techniques may be employed by chiropractors when restoring the spine's integrity and relieving the patient's symptoms. Chiropractic manipulations (also known as adjustments) are common chiropractic treatments involving a series of short-lever, high-velocity arm thrusts that aim to reduce the subluxation and provide immediate pain relief.
In addition to chiropractic adjustments, other techniques involving mobilization, exercise and the use of various types of equipment may be incorporated by chiropractors when treating back pain, neck pain and other symptoms. It must be noted that chiropractic professionals do not prescribe drugs or perform surgery.
Lower Back Pain Symptoms and Treatment Options
While there are many causes of lower back pain, most cases of low back pain can typically be linked to either a general cause or a specific and diagnosable condition.
Dysfunction in the sacroiliac joint is thought to cause low back and/or leg pain that is very similar to pain caused by a lumbar disc herniation.
As a disc degenerates, it can herniate (the inner core leaks out), which is known as a disc herniation or a herniated disc.
When done in a controlled, gradual, and progressive manner, active back exercises distribute nutrients into the disc space and soft tissues in the back to keep the discs, muscles, ligaments and joints healthy.
